"To esteemed members of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery"
Greetings to all members. I am Kwhanmien Kim, MD, PhD, the 52nd President of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. It feels like just the other day when I decided to dedicate my life to thoracic surgery as my lifelong career choice, and now, assuming the role of the President of our Society, alongside Chairman Cheong Lim and the executive committee, I find myself pondering over many thoughts.
Over the past few years, the medical field, particularly our thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, has faced numerous challenges. Despite the difficulty of normal medical practice due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have found ourselves deeply involved in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. Even after the pandemic, discussions about the crisis in essential healthcare have put pressure on the medical community. Amidst such challenges, our members have not faltered. We have tirelessly advocated for the importance and value of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery as essential healthcare, openly discussing our difficulties and striving for understanding. From principled stances to calmly racing towards improving the reality of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, we have made efforts.
In 2024, many challenges await us, demanding careful consideration and resolution. Discussions on essential healthcare are expected to proceed more earnestly, and issues such as medical fees, which have long been overdue for discussion, also loom large. Policies regarding medical support personnel such as extracorporeal circulation perfusionists and physician assistants are already underway at the government level, and we are working to ensure that our perspectives are adequately reflected. There are also reports of the government preparing for various evaluations and certifications related to thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. The Thoracic Surgery Future Forum, which was prepared within the society a few years ago, seems poised to engage in full-fledged activities. It feels like the surrounding environment is surging towards a new direction.
Despite rapidly changing environments, I will strive for the society to fulfill its core mission. I will protect the rights of each member and outline the future goals of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. I will endeavor to educate specialists and cultivate an environment where future specialists in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery can continuously grow and develop.
The year 2024 is said to be the Year of the Blue Dragon. Just as a dragon soars into the sky, surpassing difficult times and surging towards new heights, I hope that this year will be a year of remarkable leaps for thoracic and cardiovascular surgery amidst challenges. I pledge to fulfill my duties as president of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery to the best of my ability for the next year.
I sincerely wish all members a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
Thank you very much.
Kwhanmien Kim, MD, PhD. President The Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery

For the past three years, we have had a lot of difficulties due to COVID-19, however we hope you have a happy and peaceful new year
Our society has made great progress over the past 55 years. And our society was included in Essential Medical Care and grew into a society that played a big role in promoting national health care
We believe that this is the result of the outstanding leadership of our previous presidents and chairmen and their affection for the society as well as the cooperation and effort of all members.
Yet, at this moment, there are still many difficulties that the society must resolve. From behind the scenes, we will do our best to further develop the society by listening to the opinions of our members and assisting the chairman of the board. We sincerely ask for the interest and cooperation of all members.
Thank you.

Dear fellows of the Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery
I dream of an excellent feature of the Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery that has half a century of history in 2 years.
My dear senior fellows and proud colleagues and junior fellows!
This is Chang Kwon Park of Dongsan Medical Center, School of Medicine, Keimyung, who became in charge of the 44th Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery from November last year. First of all, I must give my sincere gratitude to all fellows who encouraged and supported me to take responsibility of the president of the Society.
Externally, we encounter conflicts with the government and the Korean Society of internal medicine of cardiology in relation to the integrated cardiology treatment of coronary artery diseases, solution of securing the professionals of our Society through addition charge of medical charge criteria, and institutional problem and treatment environment for the Korean Doctors' Association for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery who accounts for more than a quarter of our Society, all of which we have to solve in cooperation.
The Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery will make every effort to secure outstanding professionals for the future of our junior fellows, practical and desirable training and education, friendly relationship and active cooperation with Seoul Gyeonggi Branch, Gyeongin Branch, Busan Ulsan Gyeongnam Branch, Daegu Gyeongbuk Branch, Jungbu Branch and Honam Branch for communication of study, treatment and research outputs and for the opportunity of presentation of professionals. December 23, 2015
Chang Kwon Park, MD.
President of the Board
Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery
"To esteemed members of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery"
Greetings to all members of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. With the motto of 'Prosper with Harmony', I, Cheong Lim, MD, PhD, have taken on the role of the Chief of the Board of Directors for a new two-year term starting from January 1, 2024. I wish you all a Happy New Year and abundant blessings.
The year 2023 passed swiftly amid various issues concerning essential healthcare, medical school admissions, and corporate matters of our society. Welcoming the Year of the Blue Dragon in 2024, alongside President Kwanmien Kim, MD, PhD, Secretary-General Hyeong Ryul Kim, MD, PhD, Vice-Chairmen, Executive Directors, Deputy Secretaries-General, Committee Chairs, Auditors, and office staff, I embark on this hopeful journey. While I am delighted, I also carry the weight of responsibility, pondering how we can share burdens and navigate through challenging paths together. However, as always, I will earnestly strive to understand the intentions of our esteemed members, carefully consider all aspects, and diligently steer our society's sailing ship to its destination.
In 2024, our major events, the Spring and Fall academic conferences, are scheduled as usual. Particularly, the Spring Academic Conference will be jointly held with the Asia-Pacific Pediatric Cardiac Society (AAPCHS). Despite challenges in pediatric cardiac care linked to declining birth rates, I see it as a great honor to host distinguished scholars from Korea, China, Japan, and other countries, facilitating academic exchange and intellectual discourse. We will endeavor to make this gathering meaningful and impactful. The Fall Conference (55th Annual Meeting) is planned to take place at the Yeosu Expo Convention Center after a long hiatus, aiming to foster greater harmony for the advancement of thoracic surgery in the region.
This year, we are expanding the role of Deputy Secretaries-General from two to five, aiming to enhance organic communication with regional branches. We seek to revitalize regional branches that may have been subdued during the COVID-19 pandemic, bridging the gap between metropolitan and provincial areas and nurturing hidden talents within each region to lead our society into the future. We will exchange newsletters between regions to enhance mutual understanding and promote camaraderie. Moreover, leveraging the growing strength of private practices, we will establish cooperative platforms to aid in career exploration and improve specialty support for junior members.
Policy-wise, we will closely cooperate with various entities such as the National Assembly, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, National Health Insurance Corporation, Academy of Medical Sciences, Medical Associations, Nurses Association, Association for Thoracic Surgical Oncology, and Society of Extracorporeal Technology, etc. We will regularize meetings with these stakeholders and actively engage in discussions on pressing issues such as the expansion of medical school admissions and essential healthcare policies. Following the general elections, we will activate meetings with newly composed members of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee, experts from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and medical journalists, striving to amend existing laws such as the Specialty Training Act and Thoracic Surgery Fee Support Act in a progressive direction. We will also address priority issues directly affecting our field, such as legislation on physician assistants, improvement of qualifications and treatment for extracorporeal circulation practitioners, and equal distribution of residency positions. We will make prudent use of government funding for the nationwide network project in the field of aortic surgery, ensuring tangible benefits for our society. Active participation and dedication from members with diverse capabilities are necessary to voice our concerns and achieve swift and accurate resolutions.
Internally, we will strengthen the functions of each committee and recruit new talents to adapt swiftly to changing external environments, striving to become a society that leads reform amidst challenges akin to a ship navigating through stormy seas. With the support of the Korean Heart Foundation, we will further develop various databases (valve surgery, thoracic tumors, congenital heart surgery, coronary artery surgery, aortic surgery, ECMO registry, etc.) and contribute to the SCIE indexing of the Journal of Chest Surgery by publishing annual reports. Additionally, we will encourage member participation to elevate the standard of patient care, actively utilizing certification systems like the Center of Excellence to boost our pride and raise public awareness.
Academically, we will pursue continuous consultation and collaboration with various organizations, including major societies related to cardiology, lung cancer, and vascular surgery. We will integrate the International Exchange Committee and Social Welfare Committee into one committee, focusing on substantial contributions and expanding social service activities including medical volunteering with patient groups and NGOs. Through ongoing exchanges with related societies from various countries such as the Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (ASCVTS & ATCSA), APELSO, and counterparts from the United States, Europe, and Africa, we will promote our society's excellence and enhance its reputation globally. We will maintain continuous exchanges with the Mongolian Society for Thoracic Surgery, with whom we recently signed an MOU, through activities such as joint symposiums and medical staff exchange programs.
I express my gratitude to all those who will support us in various ways this year. With utmost dedication and sincerity, I will serve to uphold the legacy of past presidents and chairpersons, ensuring that no one tarnishes the reputation of our society. Please watch over us and lend your support.
Thank you
Cheong Lim, MD, PhD. Chief director of the Board Members, The Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery
Dear members of The Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery
Founded in 1968 The Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery has been at the center of Korea’s medical advancement through the dedication and efforts of its members over the past 53 years. It has risen to a world-class level in various fields such as clinical, research, academic, and education. As a leader at this critical time, I will do my best during the next 2 years, so that the efforts of many senior and junior members are not in vain. I believe that the first and foremost important task of a chairman is to protect the rights and interests of the society members and to take lead in solving problems pertaining to safety. I hope to create a society where various cardiothoracic surgical teams such as general members, residents, clinical nurses, and extracorporeal circulation specialists can work with pride
Primarily, it is important to carry on the work of the former executives. I will make every effort to understand the many current issues and solve them smoothly. For instance, when considering the classification of treatment areas, there are many overlapping areas between cardiothoracic surgeons and other specialists in the work fields. Treatments such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for aortic stenosis, procedures for aortic and vascular disease, varicose veins, and hyperhidrosis are main examples. In this regard, I will advocate for role and interest of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery based on principles and medical evidence. Further communication with various fields such as government ministries, academia, and patient groups were be made.
I express my gratitude to previous executives and executive branch for the efforts of the rebirth of a new name, the Society for Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, encompassing various fields such of the heart, pulmonary esophagus, and blood vessels. This name change was also intended to better inform the public of the role of cardiothoracic surgeons, and will serve as an opportunity to create an environment where members of one of the most difficult specialties, cardiothoracic surgery, can feel proud and be treated well. However, despite this advancement, there are still difference in the working environment between hospitals among different regions. Moreover, it is a well-known fact that recruiting residents for cardiovascular surgery is difficult even though it has been 10 years since the government has been providing subsidy for cardiovascular surgeons. In this regard, we are developing an ‘intensive management system for residents’ to further strengthen the role of the training review committee. Currently, there are about 100 residents in the cardiothoracic surgery department, and we plan to ensure individual care. We will establish a window to communicate with the society about various problems that arise during the training process.
After the Incorporation in mid-2021, the next several years is crucial for it is a period to settle down as a corporation while operating both the existing society and corporate society in harmony. A data-oriented IT environment for all tasks of the society, and a system that can smartly perform the tasks of the society based on the needs and environment of the cardiothoracic surgeons will be built. Once again, I sincerely thank our members, and will do my best to build a true Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery that leads the medical care of Korea. I ask for your full support, participation, and loving advice.
Thank you

Kyung Hwan Kim, MD, PhD. Chief director of the Board Members, The Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery
Distinguished members of the Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery
I believe our society has made huge strides in both clinic and academy with the dedication of many seniors and fellow members for the last 50 years. We must continue this development and exert ourselves to lead the trend of the global thoracic society academically as well as clinically.
Behind this development, however, there is a difference in working environment between hospitals and regions and it is also true that there is an attempt outside not to accept the characteristics of thoracic surgery that deals with a precious life.
Accordingly, this is a pivotal moment for us to ensure our internal stability as well as external development. We will enhance communications between members and support cooperation between hospitals to be any help for our members who work in a difficult situation. We will also try to find improvements for more effective training course of medical residents. The current external environment surrounding thoracic surgery is critical. We will fully promote the level of difficulty and risk of thoracic surgery and persuade for the precious life of patients.
We need your active attention and cooperation in order to break through these difficulties and seek substance to take it to the next level. We will concentrate the interests and opinions of you who have devoted yourselves to the medical care and focus on seeking quality over quantity.
I’d like to thank you again and will do my best for the development of our society with our sincerity and enthusiasm and the participation of all the members in this difficult situation.
Thank you.

Woong-Han KIM, M.D., Ph.D.
Chairman of the Board
The Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery
Dear members of the Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery
Since its inception in 1968, our Society has evolved clinically and academically thanks to dedication and efforts of our members and now we are celebrating 50 years of anniversary.
We will lead the global trend by strengthening our internal system and reinforcing international exchange and we will pay attention to the treatment of patients as well as education of doctors of countries that need our help.
While it is happy and thankful, we are also facing many difficulties in the medical reality where difficulties and hazard level are not reflected in the system even though we directly save the life of patients at the cutting edge.
And, to improve the medical structure that is difficult to save precious life of critical patients or emergency patients due to lack of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgeons, we will make every effort to solve problems of current medical system, to promote precious roles of Thoracic & Cardiovascular surgeons and to set up alternatives.
We come across serious problems in the medical world. But, we will develop a future 100 years by gathering our efforts together with the sense of mission of members who dedicated their lives to this noble field of Surgery.
Once again, I'd like to thank to you all and look forward to your continual interest and encouragement so that we can approach to the people closely.
Thank you.

Tae Yun Oh, MD
Chairman of the Board
The Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery
Dear members of the Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery.
The Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery seeks for academic advancement.
We are a society for the development of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Korea. Its members are dedicated to enhancing people's health and the development of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Korea.
Most areas treated by the Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery are directly related to life and it is recognized as the core of medicine.
Accordingly, our society must support our members to the full extent so that they can provide the best care for the life of patients and for the health of people.
Everyone in this country knows how we are dedicated for the national health. However, the reality differs from ideal.
Unrealistic medical charge criteria, unstable health and medical policy and selfish indifference of few colleagues are of concern/ are troublesome. Despite the fact that most of us would rather stay in surgery rooms and ICUs, next to our patients, these realities bother us.
Though we represent the core values of the Korean medical community,, we are the smallest group in the Korean medical circle.
The only way for a small group to retain its identity is to stay united)
Dear honorable members of the Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery !
Please open your mind.
Share your mind for the operation of the Society.
Please join us more so that we may represent your opinions.
Help us to create a favorable environment for our junior members to succeed proud works of the Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery.
I will do my best with honor and pride for all of our members.

Sung Bo Sim, MD.
Chairman of the Board
Korean Society for Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery
Modern thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, including open heart surgery employing cardiopulmonary bypass, was introduced to Korea in the late 1950s, but it was not until December 16, 1967, that the Association for Korean Cardiothoracic Surgeons (AKCS) was founded. Originally a division of the Korean Surgical Society, the AKCS became an independent association thanks to the efforts of representatives from four university-affiliated hospitals in which thoracic and cardiovascular surgery had been separated from general surgery. On February 3, 1968, the creators of this new society for cardiothoracic surgery gathered to organize a preparatory committee, and shortly thereafter four preparatory committee meetings were held to establish the bylaws and structure of the society. The foundation of the Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (KTCVS) was finally announced at the first plenary meeting of the society, on May 18, 1968.
Elected as the first president, vice president and chief director were Dr. Gyuk-Bu Han, Dr. Ki-Jeon Kim and Dr. Yung-Kyoon Lee, respectively. The original terms of the president and the chief director were each two years, but this was temporarily changed in 1977 to one year each, and later finalized in 1983 to one year for the president and two years for the chief director.
The foundation of the KTCVS prompted the Korean Medical Association to approve in 1972 the specialty license of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. The 1974 introduction of partially government-subsidized public medical insurance helped open heart surgery become more widely practiced in Korea. The establishment of The Korean Heart Foundation in 1984, one of the earliest charities supporting patients with congenital heart disease, further accelerated the development of cardiovascular surgery in Korea.
The 6th Asia-Pacific Congress for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (APCTCS), held in Seoul in 1983, boosted Korea's image as a leading Asian center for cardiothoracic surgery, and KTCVS founding member Dr. Yung-Kyoon Lee was elected to be the seventh APCTCS president at this gathering. The KTCVS hosted the 4th and 10th Annual Meetings of the Asian Society for Cardiovascular Surgery in Seoul in 1996 and 2002.
At present, the structure of the KTCVS comprises the executives (president, vice-presidents, chief director, secretary, and auditors), the board of directors, ten committees, and 988 regular members. From the mid-1990s, the KTCVS has created a series of awards to be granted to members recognized for outstanding achievements in cardiothoracic surgery research and education. In 2005, the KTCVS held its 37th Annual Meeting, with almost 900 registrants, 131 oral and 20 poster presentations, and three special lectures. At this meeting, nine outstanding surgeons received awards: two were given the Lee Yung-Kyoon Prize for their excellent publications in the Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, two were given the Lillehei Prize for their excellent publications and contributions to the Society, four were awarded for excellence in oral presentation, and one was given the Park Young-Kwan Prize for outstanding research work.
Over the past thirty-eight years, the mission of the KTCVS has remained the same: to promote and foster education and research in the field of cardiothoracic surgery in Korea, accomplished primarily through its annual meetings, its Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and the efforts of its Public Relations and Education Committees.
There were 78 regular and 16 associate members at the time of the foundation of the Society in 1968. In 2006, the number of members had increased to 18 honorary, 988 regular and 132 associate members, totaling 1,120. Approximately one-third of regular members are in private practice, and an association for private cardiothoracic surgery practitioners was founded in 2001 to advance their interests.
The first scientific and plenary meeting of the KTCVS was held in 1969, and annual fall meetings have been held in Seoul every year since. From 1985, a spring meeting focusing on the continuing education of members has been held in addition to the annual fall meeting; hence the 38th Fall Meeting and 22nd Spring Meeting in 2006. Spring meetings have taken place at venues all over the country.
Four Korean cardiothoracic surgeons (Dr. Sung-Nok Hong, Dr. Kun-Ho Kim, Dr. Yung-Kyoon Lee, Dr. Hoe-Sung Yu) worked as council members of the Asian Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, which was founded in 1972 and has held a biannual meeting ever since. At present (spring 2006), Dr. Hyoung-Mook Kim and Dr. Joo-Hyun Kim are council members of the organization; Dr. Kyung-Phil Suh is editors for the journal International Cardiovascular Surgery; and Dr. Bum-Goo Cho devotes himself to the journal Asian Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Annals as editor-in-chief, a position he has held since 1996. Dr. Cho is also distinguished by being the only Korean cardiothoracic surgeon nominated as a regular member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. Also noteworthy are the thirty-three Korean surgeons who by the year 2000 registered as regular members of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
